A catapult has been known in defence technology since ancient times as a constructed machine to throw something – initially just stones – whereas ballistas were constructed to shoot arrows.
In the 4th century the names for the machines got mixed up and all machines used for throwing any kind of projectile were called "catapult".
The catapult is believed to have been developed in the 4th century BCE in Syracuse, at the time of Dionysius. It has mainly been used as a siege weapon. Armies did not usually carry catapults with them because their transport was very laborious and wood was easily accessible everywhere, so it was easier to build new ones. To propel these catapults, also called onagers, stretched materials (wood, ropes or bowstrings) were mostly used that had to be tautened by the operators beforehand. (Source: Wikipedia)

Ballista (from the Greek "throw") or scorpion was a Greek and/or Roman throwing machine. Depending on the era, this term was applied to two very different kinds of catapult or weaponry.
From about 400 BCE, the Greeks started to use torsion artillery more and more. The kind of catapults called "palintona" by the Greeks because of their torsion tension was adopted by the Romans under the name of "ballista". One of the oldest and most authentic descriptions of its use can be found at Plutarch, referring to the siege of Syracuse by the Romans. (214 to 212 BCE)
The ballista from this epoch was a bi-armed ordnance whose shot power was based on the extreme twisting of two skeins. It was used to shoot mainly stones, big lead balls (which could also be filled with Greek fire, like a firebomb), huge bolts and arrows in a 10 to 45-degree angle.
The torsion springs were fixed onto a "narrow" stretcher, which means they touched the weapon's body. The wooden stretcher was strengthened by sheet bronze and had only one little opening for the ammunition. Between 100 and 300 CE, the use of this weapon slowly stopped. (Source: Wikipedia)

There is no other clear technical description other than that it was a kind of stone cannon (made to shoot stone projectiles). Mostly, short ordnances with relatively large calibres, i.e. mortars, are described. Sometimes the muzzle is described as being funnel-shaped. (Source: Wikipedia)

A battering ram is a siege engine originating in ancient times and designed to break open the masonry walls of fortifications or splinter their wooden gates.
In its simplest form, a battering ram is just a large, heavy log carried by several people and propelled with force against an obstacle; the ram would be sufficient to damage the target if the log were massive enough and/or it were moved quickly enough (that is, if it had enough momentum). Later rams encased the log in an arrow-proof, fire-resistant canopy mounted on wheels. Inside the canopy, the log was swung from suspensory chains or ropes.
Rams proved effective weapons of war because old fashioned wall-building materials such as stone and brick were weak in tension, and therefore prone to cracking when impacted with sufficient force. With repeated blows, the cracks would grow steadily until a hole was created. Eventually, a breach would appear in the fabric of the wall enabling armed attackers to force their way through the gap and engage the inhabitants of the citadel.
The introduction in the later Middle Ages of siege cannons, which harnessed the explosive power of gunpowder to propel weighty stone or iron balls against fortified obstacles, spelled the end of battering rams and other traditional siege weapons. Much smaller, hand-held versions of battering rams are still used today, however, by law enforcement officers and military personnel to bash open locked doors. (Source: Wikipedia)

Horse carts are unsprung, single-axle vehicles which are pulled by one or more horses. In Germany, these carts were often used until after the Second World War, especially in agriculture. One kind of horse cart is the Sicilian cart which is still used today. A very common kind of carriage was the tip cart which was used to transport various kinds of bulk cargo. This cart made it possible to tilt (tip) the body which was mounted onto a shaft above the axle in order to quickly unload the cargo. Vehicles like this were used on construction sites until the middle of the 20th century. (Source: Wikipedia)

A dragon (draco in Latin) is a serpent-like mythological creature which unites the characteristics of reptiles, birds and predators in different variations. Often it has wings, eagles' claws or lion paws and breathes fire.
Dragons are known as mythical creatures from many cultures' myths, sagas, legends and fairy tales; they were thought to be real, existing animals right up until the modern age.
In Middle Eastern and Western creation myths the dragon is a symbol of chaos, a monster hostile to god and people, which withholds the vital water and threatens to swallow the sun and the moon. Either a hero or a god has to defeat it and slay it in a fight in order for the world to be created or for it to continue to exist.
In contrast, the East-Asian dragon is an ambivalent creature that has mainly positive characteristics: brings rain, is a lucky charm and a symbol of fertility and imperial power. (Source: Wikipedia)
